Some Kids are Blind is a title in the Understanding Differences series from Capstone and Pebble. These books provide a great discussion starter for kids prek-2nd grade and are written at a first grade reading level. Each title in this series has several objectives: first, to demonstrate that people with disabilities are normal people, with feelings and emotions, and that they are capable of meaningful friendships. Second, the Understanding Differences series tries to show kids what special accommodations people with disabilities may need. Third, these books teach vocabulary to help kids communicate with their friends about these topics and answer questions like "why are kids blind?" in a wholesome way, allowing for sensitive discussion of disabilities. Fourth, the pictures show both special equipment kids with disabilities may need and kids having fun with friends, demonstrating the text in ways young readers can easily relate to. The books in this series are a great way to get kids to understand the challenges their peers with disabilities may face and also what they can do to be a good friend.
